Renowned poet Charles Baudelaire played a significant role in introducing Edgar Allan Poe to French readers by publishing widely read criticisms and translations of Poe's writings. The two writers shared an appreciation for the exotic, a taste for morbid subjects, and a devotion to artistic purity. Baudelaire immersed himself in the study of English for the express purpose of doing justice to Poe's works, and his translations established his reputation in the French literary world well before the publication of his most famous book of poetry, Les Fleurs du Mal. Les Fleurs du mal is a collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire, encompassing almost all of his production in verse, from 1840 until his death at the end of August 1867. Flowers of Evil It is a major work of modern poetry. His pieces break with agreed style, in use until then and rejuvenate the structure of the verse by regular use of crossings, rejects and counter-rejects. This renovates the rigid form of the sonnet. He uses suggestive images by often making unprecedented associations, such as the “cruel angel who lashes the suns” (Le Voyage). He mixes scholarly language and everyday talk. Nourished by physical sensations which memory acutely restores, the work expresses a new aesthetic where poetic art juxtaposes the moving palette of human feelings and lucid vision of a sometimes trivial reality of the most ineffable beauty. He will exert a considerable influence on later poets as eminent as Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine as well as Stéphane Mallarmé.

When *Flowers of Evil* was first published in 1857, the book almost immediately became the subject of an obscenity trial, and for several generations afterward its themes of eroticism, lesbianism, revolt and decay earned the author a reputation for depravity and morbidity. It was not until 1949 that the French courts removed the ban originally imposed on Baudelaire's masterpiece.
